Chandrasekhar, former telecom secretary, set to head NASSCOM

July 05, 2013

NASSCOM will soon have its fourth president. Former telecom secretary, R Chandrasekhar, is expected to succeed Som Mittal as president of NASSCOM, according to sources.

Chandrasekhar is an IAS officer of the Andhra Pradesh cadre who has served the Indian government from 1975 to March 2013. Having been educated at IIT, Mumbai, he also holds a post-graduate degree in computer science from Pennsylvania State University.

Chandrasekhar has assisted N. Chandrababu Naidu, the former Andhra Pradesh CM, to set up India's first Department of Information Technology. Some of his other accomplishments include the initiation of the national e-governance program, whose three pillars include the common service center program, the state data center program, and the state-wide area network program.

Dealing with the implications of the visa issue if the new US bill is passed will probably be his greatest short-term challenge.
