Chill zones for cool folks

October 18, 2012

Come the weekend, you’re looking for a hip place to unwind and cut loose. We bring you the best of Bangalore’s hangouts

Microbrewereis are the hotspots of the season. If you want proof, check out the crowds at Toit, the microbrewery-cum-pub on 100 Feet Road, Indiranagar. The space, spread over three levels is vast and airy and you won’t feel crowded in even when it is packed. Toit’s weekend crowd is a happy mix of young people who come here for the in-house brews, ranging from pale ales to darker lagers, the trendy music and the hearty food that is sensibly priced. Nibble on nachos , chicken tenders or tangy Mexican bhel with your beer. Toit’s pizzas and desserts are recommended, too. On weekends you can catch live music acts or participate in quizzes and win yourself a free drink or two.

Bier Club

Since we’re talking microbreweries, look no further than the Bier Club on swanky Vittal Mallya Road for a super fun evening out. The brewery on the premises makes a range of fresh beers; ask for the seasonal brews which include beers with a lemongrass, mango or Christmas spice flavour. Here, again, it’s a young crowd and be prepared for high noise levels on the weekend. If you prefer a quieter time, there’s the Chophouse upstairs, serving some excellent English pub grub.

Hard Rock Cafe

Walk into Hard Rock Cafe on St Mark’s and you could be in any hip city in the world – such is the international feel of the place. The trendy cafe is housed in a heritage building with loads of atmosphere and is the perfect blend of the old and the contemporary. If you’re a lover of classic rock you will enjoy the music here. The bar is most efficient and makes possibly one of the best Long Island Iced Teas in town. Whether you want to go out in a big group, or simply chill solo by the bar Hard Rock Cafe is an excellent choice.

13th Floor

Some watering holes never go out of style and 13th Floor is one of those. This pub on, what else, the 13th floor of Barton Centre is not new or trendy, but is still hugely popular, thanks to its great setting. The open terrace is a splendid spot for taking in the night lights of Bangalore from a height. The music is retro and service is old-fashioned and efficient. Book in advance if you plan to go in a large group, for the tables outside are always in demand.

UB City is a favourite hangout with the weekend crowd and Skyye, the al fresco lounge bar, is one of its happening nightspots. This breezy space also lets you take in the view from a height. The bar at the centre is well-stocked, serving up a range of premium drinks. DJs play most nights at Skyye and keep the pulse going. It’s not a cheap place, but you may want to check it out on a special occasion outing.

Monkey Bar

Here’s a New York-style gastro pub that’s great for chilling with your gang of friends. The place is packed most nights with a young crowd that comes for the innovative cocktails and the reasonably priced small platters -- think noodle soups, stir-fried beef, galouti kebabs and even vada pav. The music is cool and so is the crowd. Downstairs, you can play a few rounds of pool or catch sporting action on the large screen TVs while you nurse your maanga, an aam panna and vodka cocktail.
